How Much Power Do We Give To Cancer? Rosemary Levesque

rosemary-sqHow much of our own power do we relinquish to a diagnosis, a treatment, a drug or an idea. How much trust do we put in someone other than ourselves?

These seem like rhetorical questions, but day-to-day we may be giving away our power to others without even thinking about the consequences to our health and our very lives. I know. I’ve been there. Here’s my story.

Though I had lived away from home during my college years, I was home with my mom every weekend. In 1980 I married and moved with my husband far away to South Korea. It opened a new and very different life for both of us over the three years we were there. I continued my teaching career in International schools while my husband worked for his company.

Shortly after my move to Korea my mom sent me a letter describing the lump she found, the surgery she would have and the chemotherapy and radiation treatments she would be receiving. “Don’t worry”, she wrote. By the time I arrived home two days later, she was already in “the process”, giving her trust to her doctors and the knowledge they had. She also gave away her power.

How unlike Anne, the woman I knew as mom, to be vulnerable. After all, she had raised the four of us, supporting us through college. Though money was tight, we never felt a lack of love or material items. Anne was a child of the Depression. Her humble and gentle nature contrasted with her belief that you could have anything you wanted. “Just know what you want”, she said, “and get it.” It’s a simple philosophy that she didn’t use when she needed it the most.

Fear robs us of our power. It causes us to do and say things differently.

I watched helplessly as my mother withered from the treatments. I cared for her every need; cooking something tempting and delicious when she could eat and taking her outside when she felt stronger. Though, with every treatment, my mother became physically weaker. She finally refused the chemotherapy treatments she felt to be ineffective and harmful. I believe that’s when she realized what she had given away. She took back her power.

Through her final months, Anne regained some of her physical strength. Her inner strength amazed me. Even in accomplishing daily chores of living, Anne was joyful.

However, in the years that followed Anne’s death I still felt powerless. I went for mammograms and biopsies and believed the fearful statistics. “One out of every two” seemed like terrible odds to me. In the watchful steps I thought were empowering I grieved the circumstances of my mother’s premature death. I missed her terribly. I didn’t want to follow in her cancerous path, but failed to create a wellness path of my own.

Our knowing and trusting in ourselves empowers us.

It took me years to realize this simple revelation. What changed? I learned that cancer is a symptom, not a disease. I learned that we become vulnerable when our bodies and our minds take on more than we can handle. Toxic substances and toxic beliefs; these are the causes of our cancerous symptoms.

Simple solutions empower us; belief in your body’s power to heal itself, belief in supporting the immune system rather than destroying it, belief in gifts from the earth that pull out harmful toxins and replenish our cells. Above all, we can trust ourselves to know what is right for us. Our “knowing” is empowering.

I now trust myself and have my power. I hope you have yours too. You can create your own path.
